After clashes with the gendarmerie yesterday, military reservists from Leskovac have announced new protests. They have asked the government to reimburse them for their participation in the 1999 Kosovo war, adding that their demands apply to reservists from Kursumlija, Prokuplje and Leban as well. Reservists announce new protests Demonstrators occupied the town hall last night for several hours, demanding that the government solve the problem. The reservists are protesting over the government’s refusal to pass a ruling regarding their wages for participation in the Kosovo war. The Leskovac reservists, who are unhappy with the recent explanation that the technical government could not approve a one-off payment, began by trying to block the highway last night. Clashes between the reservists and gendarmerie took place on the Belgrade-Skopje highway, near the village of Mala Kopasnica, some 10 kilometers from Leskovac. While trying to break through the police cordon, some twenty reservists and several police officers were injured. After the incident on the highway, the reservists returned to the town, where they broke into the town hall. Leskovac Municipal President Vladan Marinkovic, in a very tense atmosphere, said that the local authorities supported the reservists’ demands. “I understand you completely. You have been waiting nine years for something you painstakingly earned. Either funds will be found to pay all the reservists in Serbia, or an avalanche will occur. The avalanche has begun!” Marinkovic exclaimed. Strike leaders and five reservists who have decided to begin a hunger strike spent the night in the town hall. Strike President Dusan Nikolic announced even bigger protests. “It will begin with more radical protests and family members will be called on to join in,” he warned. Reservists in Leskovac have been protesting for over two months. More than 10,000 citizens from the region were mobilized during the Kosovo war.
