The exhausting saga of a protest organized by ex-servicemen has today moved to the administrative line with Kosovo. Some 1,000 former military reservists from the Toplica region, who took part in the Kosovo war in 1999, but say they were never paid their due wages, have today decided to protest at the boundary near the Merdare checkpoint. But the protestors today added a new feature to their up until now mostly peaceful demonstrations, as they scuffled with police who tried to block the road some three kilometers from Merdare. When they reached a MUP riot police cordon, they left their vehicles, broke through it and continued on foot. Police did not use much force as they pushed the protesters, trying to block their passage. The veterans, dressed in army uniforms, said they reported their protest to KFOR, UNMIK and Kosovo police. They now plan to block all traffic between Kosovo and Serbia proper through the checkpoint until their demands are met.
