Serbia struggles with 2,000 fires

In a vacationing community near Bela Crkva, 400 acres of forest have been scorched. There are no injured or casualties, however, and the fire has been localized, said Pančevo police administration sector chief for protection and rescue, Ivan Zarev.

He said that 28 firefighting vehicles and 107 firefighters from Pančevo, Belgrade, Zrenjanin, Novi Sad and Kikinda are helping to put the fires out, a task made harder by high winds.

A fire also started near the dam of the Zavojska Lake, where 200 acres of the 1,500 acre forest burned.

The fire is spreading quickly because of the wind, and the firefighters are taking down trees in order to limit the fire. One person suspected of causing the fire by burning garbage has been arrested, according to B92's sources.

Fires also burned in the hills above Svrljig, in villages in the Kraljevo region, in the canyon of the Uvac River, and various other locations.

The Russian water bomber called in to help arrived this morning in Niš and will embark on its mission as soon as it is filled with water.

Helicopters will assist in guiding the plane to the fires.

The temperatures have dropped some 15 degrees Centigrade Wednesday from yesterday's record measured values that saw most towns report between 43 and 45 degrees.
