ZADAR, BELGRADE Jasenovac is a Serbian myth and not a camp where Serbs, Jews and Roma were killed, Croatian historian and priest Stjepan Razum told weekly Hrvatski list. Jasenovac was one of the death camps operated by the pro-Nazi WW2 Ustasha regime of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH). Croat historian claims “Serbs made Jasenovac up” The prisoners, mostly Serbs, were brutally killed in the camp. Razum denied the number of the Jasenovac victims, even though names of most of the victims are known, claiming that the number had no foundation in the reality. “The several-decade-long propaganda about the Jasenovac myth brought us to the situation that we today have to prove that there were no mass victims there. Therefore, it is the holy duty of Croatian historians and the entire generation, to speak up because the communists accused the Croatian people of it. The crimes in WWII were actually started by Chetniks with their mutiny against the legal Croat authorities in July 1941,” he was quoted as saying. Razum claims that the victims who were killed in Serbia were added to the number of the victims killed in Jasenovac. “One should not forget the well-known cruelty of the winners who attributed their own crimes to their enemies, meaning to us,” Razum told the Zadar-based weekly. Razum got his PhD in medieval church history and he is currently a head of the Croatian State Archive’s Archbishop Archive. He was appointed with consent of the Catholic Church.
