Finland no longer opposes Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to the Schengen area. “We have decided to support French-German compromise proposal according to which air borders should be opened in March and land borders in July,” Finish European Affairs Minister Alexander Stubb told France Presse. Bulgaria, Romania step closer to joining Schengen Finland and the Netherlands blocked Bulgaria and Romania’s entry into the Schengen zone at an EU interior ministers’ meeting in September. In order for a country to join the Schengen zone, all EU member states need to give their consent. The Netherlands still opposes the idea of letting Bulgaria and Romania join the zone. Romania has accused the Dutch government of being a hostage of its coalition partner right-wing Party for Freedom led by Geert Wilders. The Schengen area, which expands from Portugal to Poland, has often caused disputes and concern over possible illegal immigration. “The Netherlands is against Bulgaria and Romania’s accession into the Schengen zone in the current phase,” said a Dutch Foreign Ministry spokesman. He told Bulgarian state radio that the Dutch parliament did not want to support Romania and Bulgaria’s entry into the Schengen zone at the moment because the two countries still needed to take important steps regarding combat against corruption and crime. According to him, the Dutch government did not deny the fact that Bulgaria and Romania were technically ready to join the Schengen area.
