Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic "informed his DPS party" that he was stepping down as the countries prime minister today. The party then proceeded to nominated Deputy PM and Finance Minister Igor Luksic as the PM-designate, reports from Podgorica said. Djukanovic, in power in Montenegro for almost two decades as the country's president and prime minister, stepped down once already as head of government, in October 2006. However, a year and a half later he was back in the same role. Djukanovic, who confirmed he would continue at the helm of his party, claims that fatigue with the job was the reason behind his decision, but Montenegro's opposition parties say he is stepping down because "the international community" has demanded this. Montenegrin PM steps down

Another of Đukanović's deputies in the cabinet, Svetozar Marović, has also announced he would resign.

Đukanović, in power in Montenegro for almost two decades as the country's president and prime minister, stepped down once already as head of government, in October 2006. However, a year and a half later he was back in the same role.

Đukanović, who confirmed he would continue at the helm of his party, claims that fatigue with the job was the reason behind his decision, but Montenegro's opposition parties say he is stepping down because "the international community" has demanded this.

The opposition parties have also hinted that they may now push for early parliamentary elections.
