Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said that convicted General Branimir Glavas would be stripped of his rank if the law calls for such an action. Glavas was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison for war crimes committed against Serb civilians in the Croatian town of Osijek in 1991. Croat leader on war criminal's army rank Josipovic said that as the president, he should not even contemplate not implementing laws, adding that he will act in accordance with them, or the way in which parliament that decides on such actions believes it should be handled. He said that someone who committed a war crime should not have rank or an official status of any kind in Croatia, and asked whether anyone believed that “the trials are just a process to fool people and act as a demonstration for international public.” When Glavas was stripped of his seven decorations in August, Josipovic said that he would be taking such medals and ranks away from all people who have been convicted of crimes by law, and have been given more than three years of prison time to serve. Glavas, who is currently a fugitive in Bosnia-Herzegovina, was able to choose according to an agreement signed between Croatia and Bosnia where he wants to serve his sentence, since he is a citizen of both countries, said that he would rather serve his sentence in the Bosnian Zenica prison than spend one day in a Croatian prison, because he believes that his trial was "politicized".
