A fast and tangible national strategy is the only response to the challenges thrown up by the current crisis, says Croatian President Stjepan Mesic. This strategy will be the basis of Croatia’s version of the American “New Deal”, creating a new economic and development paradigm, Mesic told an annual conference of economists in Opatija. Mesic presents Croatian “New Deal” Only Croatia’s national bank, HNB, had prepared appropriately for the crisis, Mesic said, adding that the bank had been taking the job of preserving the stability of the financial system very seriously for many years, Croatian media report. The president said that there was a possibility of foreign banks in Croatia selling off their local branches, and reducing or even blocking new loans that were so badly needed for returning the old ones. "Money deposited in banks belongs to the Croatian economy, citizens and state!” Mesic underlined, adding that the money had to be kept in Croatia, in the same way that profit generated in Croatia had to stay there too. He emphasized that Croatia had the right to ask, at least temporarily, that money earned in Croatia be reinvested in the country. Money earned in Croatia must be used to preserve and create jobs here, the president stressed.
