Romania will in December start negotiations with Russia in order to take part in the South Stream gas pipeline project. This was reported on Sunday by Realitatea TV, and confirmed by Russian embassy in Bucharest adviser Aleksandr Vassilev, who noted that while South Stream will be built faster than rival Nabucco, "there is room for both projects on the energy map". Romania to join South Stream? Some hints that Romania might join the Russian natural gas pipeline came three weeks ago from Gazprom CEO Aleksei Miller, after a meeting in Moscow between Gazoprom and Romania's Romgaz representatives. Russia has so far made arrangements about the pipeline transit with Serbia, Bulgaria, Hungary and Greece. Romania has for several years been involved in the Nabucco project – a part of this country's energy strategy that says Europe needs alternative to Russian gas. A week ago, Romanian President Traian Basescu said that his country will "by no means abandon a European project such as Nabucco for the sake of the South Stream", and dubbed the former a priority for Bucharest. At the time, Basescu said, however, that the situation would be different if the Russian pipeline were to pass through Russia, but that "even then it would not be an alternative to Nabucco".
