The trial of Branimir Glavas and others accused of war crimes committed against Serbs in Osijek resumed in Zagreb today. The trial was adjourned last month after one of the defense lawyers walked out of the courtroom after the Zagreb District Court’s trial chamber refused to allow him to question an expert doctor who had ascertained that one of the defendants, despite his health problems, was nonetheless able to follow the trial, Croatian media reported. Glavas war crimes trial continues The first witness to give testimony today was police officer Ladislav Bece, who was working as a technician when the crimes in Osijek were committed. Bece was one of the members of a team that had conducted an inquest in the courtyard of the National Defense Secretariat following the murder of Cedomir Vuckovic. Vuckovic was, according to the indictment, one of two men killed in the garage of the National Defense Secretariat, an institution run by Glavas in 1991. According to Bece, police were told that Vuckovic had been killed as a suspected terrorist after jumping over the fence with the intention of killing Glavas. “But, the evidence at the crime scene led me to believe that this story was not logical,” Bece said. Key witness Krunoslav Fehir subsequently confessed that he had shot Vuckovic using a weapon given to him personally by Glavas, while the prosecution claims that Vuckovic and the other victim in the “garage” case, Djordje Petrovic, were forced to drink battery acid shortly prior to their deaths.
