Bulgarian and Russian officials signed a deal for the former’s participation in the Russo-Italian pipeline, South Stream. A further contract was signed for the construction of a nuclear power station. Bulgaria, Russia seal pipeline deal The Bulgarian government took the decision to conclude the agreement this morning at an emergency session during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said that the agreement with Russia had been reached at the last moment “thanks to Mr Putin’s intervention.” Stanishev added that the value of the branch of the pipeline that would pass through Bulgaria would be EUR 1.4bn, while the whole structure would be worth EUR 10bn. “Bulgaria’s involvement in this project will enhance this country’s position on the European energy map,” said the Bulgarian prime minister. The deal envisages the annual flow of Russian gas passing through Bulgaria increasing from 17 to 30 billion cubic meters, Bulgarian Economy and Energy Minister Petar Dimitrov had said earlier. Gazprom’s South Stream will compete with the planned European pipeline, Nabucco. South Stream, valued at some EUR 10mn, will transport gas from Russia across Bulgaria and central and southern Europe. The EU supports the Nabucco project that Bulgaria is also involved in, that will take gas from the Caspian Sea, bypassing Russia. The Bulgarian government took the decision to conclude the agreement this morning at an emergency session during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said that the agreement with Russia had been reached at the last moment “thanks to Mr Putin’s intervention.”

Stanishev added that the value of the branch of the pipeline that would pass through Bulgaria would be EUR 1.4bn, while the whole structure would be worth EUR 10bn.

“Bulgaria’s involvement in this project will enhance this country’s position on the European energy map,” said the Bulgarian prime minister.

The deal envisages the annual flow of Russian gas passing through Bulgaria increasing from 17 to 30 billion cubic meters, Bulgarian Economy and Energy Minister Petar Dimitrov had said earlier.
