Repaired road Korenita-Krupanj opens for traffic

Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic, Charge d'Affaires at the EU Delegation to Serbia Jose Antonio Gomez and Acting Director of Putevi Srbije Zoran Drobnjak cut the ribbon and opened the road.

Mihajlovic said that the reconstructed second-class road Korenita-Krupanj is rather significant for the Krupanj municipality at it has an annual flow of over half a million travelers.

She added that the European Union provided EUR 4.5 million for the upgrade of this 12 km-long road.

Krupanj Municipality President Rade Grujic thanked the EU for their help and noted that the commute from Krupanj to Loznica will now take 25 minutes less.

"Today, Krupanj opens its gates to the world", said Grujic adding that the new road will not only lead to Loznica but even further, to the Drina River and Bosnia-Herzegovina as well.

The EU will continue helping Serbia in recovering from a massive flooding that hit the country last year, and also in preventive flood protection, Jose Antonio Gomez, charge d'affaires at the EU Delegation to Serbia, said Friday.

The EU quickly mobilized funds to help Serbia’s flood recovery efforts, Gomez said at a ceremony of opening a repaired road between Korenita and Krupanj in western Serbia.

More than EUR 5.6 million in aid has been earmarked for Krupanj alone, he said.

Gomez observed that the EU had allocated EUR 30 million as aid to Serbia in the first flood recovery stage, EUR 72 million in the second stage and made another EUR 60 million available to the country through the Solidarity Fund.

That means we have EUR 172 million available to continue tackling the problems caused by the floods, said Gomes, adding that the money would be used for reconstruction of infrastructure and flood prevention.

He stressed that Serbia was an excellent example of how it was possible to achieve good results and help people in a very short time when joint efforts had a clear objective.

I can say from my personal experience of 20 years working with te European Commission that I have never before seen aid provided and projects implemented so quickly, said Gomez, and thanked the Serbian government for a very good cooperation.
