FM expects "most positive EC report to date"

Appearing on a Radio and Television of Serbia (RTS) news program, Dačić expressed the belief that Serbia will receive the best mark among all West Balkan countries.

When Serbia started the EU accession talks in January, it also embarked on wide-ranging internal reforms, including the harmonization of legislation, and measures aimed to bring about the economic stabilization of the country, he said.

Dačić noted that the second part of Serbia-EU relations, listed under current issues, includes the issue of Kosovo and Metohija, adding that the intergovernmental conference between the EU and Serbia is scheduled to take place on December 19.

In this conference, the EU member states will voice their opinion on the opening of individual chapters in accession negotiations with Serbia, explained Dačić.

"Some countries, such as Germany, later joined by Great Britain, believed that Chapters 23 (on judiciary and fundamental rights) and 24 (on justice, freedom and security) should be opened first, he said.

"However, now that Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić has established contacts with the German government, we can ask them to advocate for the opening of Chapter 32 first (financial control) as well as Chapter 35 on Kosovo, because of the problems with the implementation of the agreement with Priština," the Serbian foreign minister explained.

"We will see if this is possible, considering that the EU insists for the negotiations to start with Chapters 23, 24 and 35," said Dačić, stressing that these chapters can make the path towards the EU difficult for any country.

The Serbian foreign minister added that he will go to Brussels on October 10 to once again stress the commitment of Serbia to the EU accession process.
