Constitutional Court holds public debate on Brussels deal

The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) asked the Constitutional Court to appraise whether the deal violated the Constitution.

"The Constitutional Court is not competent to assess a political act as it would take on the role of the government of Serbia in determining and conducting policy," said Selaković.

Representatives of the government and the petitioners, as well as legal experts took part in the public debate hosted by the Court.

Selaković added that "the political context is such that substantial autonomy of Kosovo and Metohija must be determined in negotiations with Priština before adopting an appropriate constitutional law."

Speaking on behalf of the DSS, academician Kosta Čavoški said that the agreement between Belgrade and Priština represents a general legal act and that "even a person without any elementary legal knowledge can see that."

Čavoški urged Serbia's Constitutional Court to rule based on conscience and not fall for the government's "legal sophistry."

Constitutional Court President Vesna Ilić-Prelić said that the court would "make the decision alone," but that the situation was "specific," which is why the public debate was organized "in order to hear different arguments."
