BELGRADE Serbian Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic has said he is "certain" that Serbia will be "the next state to join the European Union." Mrkic's confidence is based on the belief that this is also a wish of those states which are already part of the European family of peoples, but admits that we have a lot of work ahead of us along that road. FM says "Serbia will be next state to join EU" "I firmly believe in that. My belief is mostly grounded in the friendship and support that our partners from the EU are offering to us and I know that we will not disappoint them,” Mrkic said in an interview to the Belgrade-based tabloid Kurir. Speaking about the strengthening of Serbian diplomacy across the world, the minister underlines that our diplomatic and consular representative offices in any country could contribute to the efforts aimed at the country's economic growth. In the coming period, the ministry will increase the oversight of their level of engagement concerning the protection of interests of Serbian citizens abroad, the minister said. Commenting on relations with the U.S., Mrkic says that they are very good, there is more and more understanding, “our communication is intensive, political contacts constant.” “Such good relations with Washington, I can hardly remember. We are very satisfied with that, and it is our strong intention to deepen and enrich them even further in every possible sense,” the Serbian foreign minister said. (Beta, file) Tanjug Kurir
