BELGRADE Political Science Professor Jovan Teokarevic says Serbia in is for difficult and lengthy negotiations with the EU, which will probably take six to eight years. Teokarevic added that the negotiations can be interrupted "at any time." Serbia to negotiate "six to eight years" He told public broadcaster RTS that each EU member state may request that the negotiating is temporarily interrupted if "expected progress" is missing. "It happens all the time, and there were even unprincipled things, as in the case of Croatia, where due to bilateral relations a suspension of its negotiations was imposed for a specified time, simply because one of the member states was demanding the fulfillment of its interests. We will deal with it for sure, and not just from one country," warned the professor. According to him, Serbia will have permanently open three chapters in the negotiations: 23, 24 and 35, relating to the judiciary, rule of law, "and its relations with Kosovo." Teokarevic further stressed that "each member state may request verification at any time." "Nothing will be easy, look at how long the period of screening envisaged by (Stefan) Fule is, which should examine if our laws are in line with EU legislation. A period of two years has been given. This means that no one expects easy negotiations." He described EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule's visit to Belgrade and Pristina as "the good will of the European Commission," as it "formally began the negotiation process before the vacations." Speaking about the election of the head of Serbia's negotiating team, Teokarevic said that he "agreed with the assessment of the prime minister" that this person should not be a senior officer, but "an expert who knows the process of negotiations, and how the EU works."
