BELGRADE Slovakia's Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak has said that the Serbian government "should focus on EU integration". He added that "concentrating on internal politics would be a big mistake". "Serbia should focus on EU integration" According to Lajcak, the president and government had surpassed his expectations regarding EU integration, adding that the general impression "in Europe" was the same. The talks between Belgrade and Pristina and normalization of the relations with Kosovo are an important element, he told the weekly Akter. "Most in Europe see the talks with Pristina as key for Serbia's EU integration, and Serbia knows well that a sustainable solution for Kosovo is needed," he stated. "The meeting between Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and Kosovo President Atifeta Jahjaga was a step in the right direction and should help normalize relations and support the talks between Belgrade and Pristina," he believes. "The government has taken up obligations accepted by the previous administration," Lajcak noted, adding he therefore saw no logical connection between the new government and the drop in EU's popularity among Serbians. "All countries of the Western Balkans are at some stage of EU integration, and the statements coming from Albania during the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the country's independence were an unpleasant surprise," he remarked. "All those pan-nationalistic ambitions are counterproductive, and neither the Balkans nor Europe will tolerate them," he pointed out. Commenting on recent Hague Tribunal acquittals of Albanian and Croatians accused of war crimes committed against Serbs, Lajcak said it would be "bad to connect those to Serbia's EU integration".
