The Democratic Party (DS) warned late Wednesday that a government should be formed as soon as possible so that it could get to work on major economic problems. The Democrats also expressed hope the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) would stop discouraging investors. Progressives, Democrats trade accusations over investments "The DS believes that a government and all institutions should be formed in the shortest possible time frame, so that we can get started on solving major economic problems," the party said in a release. The post-election period is characterized by political instability and uncertainty in every country until institutions and the parliamentary majority are formed, said the DS. "DS leader Boris Tadic pointed this out when he talked about some investors' decision to postpone coming to Serbia," says the release. The DS expressed hope the SNS would not discourage foreign investors with its statements and actions but contribute to making Serbia a stable country, attractive to companies which want to continue investing there. On Wednesday, the SNS and the DS accused each other in the media for the decision of Italian companies Danieli and Baldieri to delay their planned investments in Serbia. The SNS said in a release that the DS was not capable of securing new investments, stating Danieli as an example, and accused Tadic of “saying brutal lies in an attempt to justify his own incompetence”. The Progressives stated that they had already contacted the Italian Embassy and that they would do everything to bring Danieli to Serbia. DS top officials Jelena Trivan and Bozidar Djelic responded by saying that the fact that the foreign investors had given up on coming to Serbia had to do with newly elected President Tomislav Nikolic. “President Tomislav Nikolic managed in just seven days in office to create a problem with the region, the EU and the entire world and this is why it should not be surprising that investors are not ready to invest in Serbia at the moment,” Trivan stressed. Djelic added that the new political circumstances in Serbia had led the Italian company to invest in Croatia instead of Serbia. SNS official Jorgovanka Tabakovic noted, however, that the investors decided on investing in certain country based on profit “and not on anyone’s statements” and added that Trivan’s claims were “nonsense”.
