Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) leader Ivica Dacic has said that the new government will not be formed in the next several days. According to him, the talks on the forming of the new government will be finished by the end of June. "Talks on govt. to be finished by late June" “It is important for the Democratic Party (DS) to continue negotiations on the parliamentary majority and who will be in it,” he told daily Vecernje novosti. The SPS leader announced that he would keep his position of interior minister in the future government. “To use sport terms, why would I change the winning team? The ministry, according to the public assessment, did the best job in the previous government and the people trust it the most, right after Church. And I am the minister who got the highest marks,” he explained. He stressed that the DS and the SPS still had not discussed whether the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) would be the third partner in the future government. “That has not been discussed yet,” Dacic was quoted as saying. When asked which party was more acceptable, the LDP or the United Regions of Serbia (URS), he said that “the most important thing for us is that the future government is formed on a program which is acceptable for our coalition”. “There were parties that we did not agree with in the previous government too, but they were unable to impose their positions as the cabinet’s official course,” the SPS leader was quoted as saying. “The economic program should be the central topic of the further talks. You can see that the EU is changing its economic policy. Instead of austerity measures and cutting down wages, it requests investments in economic development. The things that have become outdated in the world cannot be continued in Serbia,” he noted. Dacic said that allegations that the SPS-led coalition would request two more ministries were not true, adding that “it was not discussed at all”. According to him, cooperation between the government and Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic could be successful. “If both the government and the president work exclusively in the interest of the state I do not see why cohabitation would be unsuccessful,” the SPS leader said and stressed that “he is not disappointed that he most likely will not be a prime minister”.
