Tomislav Nikolic has said that any stance on Kosovo "that does not include agreement between the (ruling) DS and the SNS" - does not count. The leader of the opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) spoke in Belgrade on Tuesday to say that he expected elections to take place after March and voiced his belief that his party would then come to power for the first time. "Only SNS-DS agreement on Kosovo counts" This offshoot of the Serb Radical Party (SRS), and the Democratic Party (DS), have been consistently polling as the country's most popular parties. The SNS, however, has not yet taken part in parliamentary elections. Tadic today qualified the postponement of the decision on Serbia's EU membership candidate status as "catastrophic "for the Serbian citizens and condemned the government for "blaming its own mistakes on the EU". Nikolic expects that elections will be held as legally scheduled, but definitely after March and a new decision by the European Council on Serbia's candidacy. He said the decision might turn out to be negative, but the Serbian government still had the chance to do its best until March and have the European Council issue a positive opinion, a chance for “the ruling coalition to lessen the gap that exists between them and the SNS.” He said that that Kosovo had been presented as a major reason for Serbia's EU integration failure. "If you asked the Serbian citizens whether the government had carried out a successful reform of the country, bringing it at such a level that it could apply for the EU membership on good foundation, they would say it had not," Nikolic added. Nikolic said that 2011 had been marked by the betrayed expectations concerning European integration, with Serbia remaining three steps behind Croatia and two behind Montenegro and Macedonia. The year was also marked by disagreements within the ruling coalition, which is becoming obvious now that the parties are taking their own particular positions ahead of the elections, he said. Nikolic noted that "when the SNS formed the new government, it would call on the national minority parties to join them". He recalled his party's stance that the Kosovo issue needed an agreement and a general consensus between all political actors in Serbia. "Any issue discussed with (ethnic) Albanians should also include Russia and the United States," concluded Nikolic. Tomislav Nikolic is interviewed by Tanjug on Tuesday (Tanjug) Tanjug
