Serbian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Dragoljub Micunovic says Serbia should open up an international discussion on northern Kosovo status. "We must preserve our influence in Kosovo, and create conditions for the status of northern Kosovo which would be acceptable for the people residing there, so that Serbia can at the same time become an EU member state," he told Belgrade-based daily Politika. “Serbia should start discussion on N. Kosovo status” He said that the withdrawal of Serbian institutions from the north of Kosovo would not be a condition for becoming an EU candidate country, since Serbia mostly fulfilled the necessary conditions. “However, the question is whether the date for commencement of accession talks will be determined. This remains uncertain. It is evident that this will be related to a status of northern Kosovo,” Micunovic was quoted as saying. He said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s messages came as a surprise to him, not a big one though, and that he would not interpret them as an ultimatum, because there was still room to discuss the matter. Micunovic is of the opinion that Belgrade is not presented with the choice between the EU and Kosovo. He added that the dialogue was indispensable for reaching adequate solutions.
