Metropolitan Amfilohije of the Diocese of Raska and Prizren said that it is too early to leave the protection of Kosovo monasteries to local police. Amfilohije told the Tanjug news agency that not enough time has passed since the violent mass exile of Kosovo Serbs and destruction of Orthodox sanctities in 2004, and that the monks are not prepared to invest their full confidence in local security forces. “Too early to let Kosovo police guard monasteries” According to the metropolitan's information, KFOR is expected to hand over the protection of monasteries Gracanica, Gorioc and Budisavci to the Kosovo police by the end of the month. “We believe and feel that it is too early to leave the protection of the monasteries to the Kosovo police service, especially if we keep in mind that a considerable number of persons in the service were responsible for the violent outbursts and events in 2004,” Amfilohije stated. He added that the monks and priests of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) who remained in Kosovo and endured the gravest times have no intention of leaving the province. Amfilohije expressed hope that the United Nations would adopt a final decision on the status of Kosovo, which would be in accordance with “divine and secular justice” and which would hopefully conclude that Kosovo should remain a part of Serbia as it has been for centuries now. He said he hopes that international institutions in charge of world cultural heritage would help preserve Serbian cultural and religious monuments in Kosovo and would not allow them to be referred to as Kosovo's heritage.
