The European Commission denied media speculation that the EU will be naming a special envoy for the Western Balkans after Wednesday’s conference in Sarajevo. The EC said that there have been talks regarding the idea, but that no decisions have been made yet. Reports about Balkan EU envoy refuted Belgrade daily Danas reported on Tuesday that some of the most serious candidates for the position are former Bosnian International high representatives Paddy Ashdown and Miroslav Lajcak. Officials in Slovakia, where Lajcak is currently the foreign minister, denied the claims, according to Slovak agency TASR. “These speculations are not based on truth,” Slovak Foreign Ministry spokesperson Peter Stano said. Danas cited unnamed diplomatic sources, claiming that a special envoy for the Western Balkans would be named by the EU Council of Ministers, meaning that they would be working under EU Foreign and Security Policies Chief Catherine Ashton, who would appoint the envoy officially.
