U.S. ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick said that the doors of NATO are open to Serbia, but the decision must be made by Serbia on its own. She told the Beta news agency that the U.S. “completely supports the European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Serbia and is doing everything to help its efforts in that direction.” “U.S. supports Serbia’s European path” “EU membership is a very important goal, but a lot more work needs to be done. Serbia is now, after submitting its demand for candidacy, on the right road towards the EU,” she said. “I think that it is important to be completely clear that the doors to NATO membership are open for Serbia,” Warlick said. She said that cooperation through the Partnership for Peace between NATO and Serbia is “very important” and that “efforts should be increased in that program, which would work to Serbia’s advantage.” “I believe without question that NATO membership brings significant advantages. But we understand that it is a difficult question,” she said. She said that Serbia has a very important role in the region, and that it is “in the interest of Belgrade to solve all open questions with its neighbors.” She also said that America supports the adoption of the resolution for condemning the Srebrenica crimes. Warlick said that Washington and Belgrade “agreed to disagree on Kosovo,” but that the countries will continue to cooperate in many other fields. Mary Warlick (Beta)
