The government has decided to sack several coordinators in Kosovo who have refuse to make way for newly-elected officials. Even though the coordinators’ mandate ended with the formation of new municipal assemblies, some coordinators have refused to hand over the seals, office keys and service vehicles to the newly-elected officials. Kosovo coordinators dismissed State Secretary in the Kosovo Ministry Oliver Ivanovic told B92 that the new local government had been established after obstruction by several coordinators. “A little time was needed for the election results to be counted and for the government to prepare for this move. It is completely logical that after the May 11 elections, there is no room any longer for the coordinators in that capacity,” Ivanovic said. With the formation of municipal assemblies, coordinators’ mandates in Kosovo expired, although Belgrade needed to adopt a special decision to dismiss them in order to persuade others into leaving voluntarily, MP Ljubomir Kragovic told B92. He criticized the work of the coordinators in Kosovo, stating that they had been party players who had not worked in the general interest. The Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) had a mandate to hold elections in Kosovo and entrust power to municipal councilors. However, as a result of party decisions to reappoint certain people, many councilors continue to work in local assemblies in breach of the law, now that RIK’s mandate has expired.
