Bulgaria has been left without financial assistance because of misuse of European funds and corruption. Bulgaria’s case should serve as a lesson to Serbia. Nikola Jovanovic, coordinator for harmonizing laws in the Office for European Law, believes that the repercussions Bulgaria is facing are grave and far-reaching, and will have a detrimental effect on future applications the country makes to the EU. Nenadic believes that Serbia has both laws and institutions, but that it still has a problem with corruption. He says that it is very hard to guage the level of corruption in a country. “According to a study, 12-20 percent of people in Serbia are prepared to give or take a bribe, which is worse than Bulgaria,” he points out. Nenadic and Jovanovic believe that while Serbia does not have as many problems as Bulgaria, corruption has to be “treated” with a number of remedies.
