The Liberal Democrats (LDP) today denounced recent public opinion polls, which place them below the five percent threshold. Member of the party's presidency Zoran Ostojic, speaking in a news conference in Belgrade, called on all participants in Serbia's political scene to engage in a fair and honest campaign. LDP cries foul over opinion polls Ostojic told reporters that the LDP believes "numerous irregularities" occurred in recent opinion polls published in Serbia, and added that different estimates of parties' ratings were printed in daily and evening issues of newspapers – when it came to the LPD. "Public opinion surveys during the campaign are legal, but it is necessary to know who ordered them, which is not the case here," he said, and added that an attempt to manipulate and influence voters was taking place. Ostojic showed reporters a Gallup questionnaire from Novi Sad, that had the LDP listed incorrectly. "The list is identified as LDP-Social Democratic Union-Christian Democratic Party of Serbia-Cedomir Jovanovic, and not LDP-Cedomir Jovanovic," Ostojic said. In his words, this is meant to "drive voters away and confuse them". The LDP-Social Democratic Union-Christian Democratic Party of Serbia-Cedomir Jovanovic list was submitted for the January 2007 parliamentary vote. He also gave another example of the LDP being wrongly identified is a questionnaire on the local elections in Novi Sad. According to Ostojic, this is an example of how "profession is sold out because of other interests", and accused the agencies conducting the polls and those ordering them of collusion. Ostojic, himself a former journalist, also addressed a recent controversy when President Boris Tadic sent a letter to the editor-in-chief of the daily Politika, over media reports about late Belgrade Mayor Nenad Bogdanovic (DS), and his estate. The LDP official said the correspondence between Tadic and Politika's Ljiljana Smajlovic is "inappropriate", and added that the state has a 50 percent stake in the daily, "and the golden share", and that Smajlovic is the editor-in-chief "thanks to Tadic".
