The Pristina team is defying attempts to "open the issue of Kosovo independence" in the next meeting with Belgrade. Kosovo Albanian team spokesman, Skender Hyseni, said today that Pristina’s platform on good neighborly relations with Serbia remained the basis for the continuation of direct talks with Belgrade due to take place in Brussels on October 14. “Only independence can benefit Kosovo Serbs” “The Kosovo Albanian side has expressed its firm position, according to which the status and territorial sovereignty of Kosovo are non-negotiable issues. We can only discuss ways to promote relations between Kosovo and Serbia as two sovereign states,” he said. Hyseni also rejected the possibility of discussing any other solutions such as confederation, partition or other options being mentioned in the media. He confirmed that Pristina had not yet received an official invitation to the meeting in Brussels. Earlier today, Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Ceku’s political adviser, Azem Vlasi, said on that should Kosovo remain under Serbian sovereignty, it would be “primarily detrimental for Serbia.” Podgorica daily Republika quoted him as saying that Serbia had lost its battle for Kosovo in 1999, stressing that the Kosovo Assembly “has a right to declare independence after December 10.” “That will indeed happen in cooperation with our partners in the international community who endorse Ahtisaari’s plan, just as we do,” argued Vlasi. In his opinion, in the event of a unilateral proclamation of independence, there will be “no mass exodus of Serbs from Kosovo.” “Serbs in Kosovo can only benefit from an atmosphere where Albanians and others are satisfied, where 90 percent of the Kosovo population is happy,” Ceku’s adviser concluded.
