Interior Minister Dragan Jocic (DSS) told reporters he was happy with his ministry’s work over the last one hundred days. Jocic was speaking in a news conference in Belgrade Thursday when he said that "the intense struggle with all forms of organized crime has led to a stable security situation, giving citizens peace of mind, both personally and with regards to their property." MUP's 100 days progress report Jocic said that in so doing, the Interior Ministry (MUP) had continued the successful work of the past four years, stressing that the police had been particularly targeting organized criminal groups of all profiles. At a news conference to mark 100 days of the new government, he emphasized that the MUP had also become a reliable partner to international police forces, not only in neighboring countries, but all round the world. As an example of their success, the Interior Ministry cited the fact that in the last one hundred days six brand new criminal groups had been smashed, that had cost tax-payers more than EUR 50mn with the illegal import of oil derivates, robberies and re-sale of stolen cars abroad. Jocic specified that ninety-two people had been arrested who had been members of these six groups, pointing out that, at the same time, the police had been very successful in curbing the trade of illegal drugs. The minister said that nine drug smuggling rings had been busted, and 262 kilograms of various forms of drugs had been seized, including about 100 kg of heroin. He is pleased with progress in the battle against drug smuggling, indicating that in that sector, three organized groups, numbering twenty-nine members, had been discovered in the regions of Smederevo and Novi Sad, that had also been active in Sweden and Denmark. Jocic said that major results in curbing the practice of human trafficking had also been made, in cooperation with police from neighboring countries, noting that in one operation alone, forty-three organisers of this illegal trade had been arrested. Turning to the situation in the Ground Safety Zone in three municipalities in the south of Serbia, the minister said that the security situation there was stable, although he warned that owing to events nearby, it was essential to maintain security forces at their current level. He also announced the adoption of new legal measures in the Interior Ministry’s sphere of activity, such as the Law on Citizenship and the Law on Travel Documents, noting that a Law on Asylum was also being prepared.
