A Democratic Party (DS) spokeswoman says Serbia's democratic bloc needs to unite in the next presidential elections. Jelena Markovic told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik that her party would not insist on having a single candidate for all of the so-called democratic parties, however, she added that the issue had yet to be discussed within the ruling coalition. DS calls for single "democratic candidate" She said that constitutional law clearly states that both local and presidential elections need to be called before the end of 2007, and that every party “that even thinks of violating this will directly violate the country's constitutional system.” “There is no room for political deals, not in the sense of when laws must be adopted and when elections must be called. Both sets of elections will have to be called by the end of the year,” Markovic said. She added that it is also highly likely that the presidential and local elections would be held at the same time.
