EU dwells on cabinet stalemate

The EU does not wish to be heard in regards to “Serbia’s last efforts to form a new government”, but it regards the latest developments as adverse and likely to lead to fresh elections, Beta quoted its EU sources in Brussels.

“The EU does not want to create an impression of any meddling into Serbia’s internal affairs, even though it can be deduced that too much time and effort have been spent in finding a way out of the complex situation which is not beneficial to Serbia and its relations with the EU,” the diplomats said.

However, the EU circles still harbor hopes that the new Parliament could contribute to finding a sensible solution for the new government and breaking the stalemate in EU-Serbia relations.

“To EU’s great disappointment, democratic political parties in Serbia that won the trust of the voters to implement necessary reforms and set the country on the EU-wise path are not able to agree over a clear and sound government’s program and appoint reliable personnel that could carry it out,” Beta’s sources explained.

The European Commission had said earlier that new Serbian government was "holding the key" to the resumption of negotiations on stabilization and association with the European Union, and that the EC was prepared to do this "as soon as possible."

Set conditions still stand. The EU awaits “a display of unequivocal resolve to undertake tangible and effective measures that would lead to the arrest of remaining war crimes fugitives.”

Despite an apparent standstill in SAA talks, an upcoming visit of a high official of the EC, Jean-Louis Brauer on May 8 is regarded as a sign of progress. He is expected to sign the agreements on visa alleviation and readmission with the Serbian authorities.
