Kosovo: War of words rages on

Janjić believes EU enlargement chief Olli Rehn’s remarks yesterday worked only to undermine NATO’s and UNMIK’s credibility.

“Olli Rehn faces serious problems in the EU. In fact, the administration in Brussels has decided to take over the Kosovo protectorate and create an independent state there. Part of that bureaucracy – Rehn included – has failed to consult the EU member states on this.”

“I’m afraid this kind of argument will encourage violence, at the same time discouraging the EU governments from taking part in the Kosovo mission. This is not helping Belgrade and Belgrade must refrain from manipulating the issue; it doesn’t help Priština either. Whether it helps Olli Rehn in his struggle against the other [EU] faction led by Javier Solana, I can’t say,” Janjić concluded.

His Priština counterpart Shkelzen Maliqi agrees that the warnings issued by Western diplomats lately constitute for some sort of diplomatic war.

He, however, sees the essence of the dispute in a conflict between the U.S and the EU on the one, and Russia and Serbia on the other side.

Maliqi believes that should the UN Security Council fail to adopt a resolution determining Kosovo’s status, the province’s assembly will declare independence. He also downplays warnings of a possible war.

“I do not know who is supposed to fight whom here and what kind of violence is expected: Serbs against NATO, Albanians against NATO, Serbs and Albanians against each other? Incidents such as those in 2004 might occur, but there is no potential for war. What Holbrooke and Rehn have been saying recently constitutes for rhetorical threats, a kind of a mini cold war based on a marginal issue such as Kosovo, used by Russia and the West to flex their muscles,” Maliqi says.
