Romanian deputy prime minister resigns

“I will focus on my activity as the leader of Hungarian party to consolidate its relationship with the electorate and the community,” Bela said.

The UDMR’s support among the 1.4 million ethnic Hungarians in Romania has decreased in recent years since the party formed part of successive governments.

Polls show more and more Hungarians believe the UDMR has failed to fulfill the community’s demands: increased autonomy for Hungarians in Tranyslvania, more Hungarian-language higher education and the return of property belonging to mainly Protestant Hungarian churches that was confiscated after the Second World War.

The status of ethnic Hungarians in Romania has been a source of conflict between the neighboring countries, though relations have eased in recent years.
