Croatia arrests top privatization officials
"The government welcomes this action, which is a result of our determination to uproot graft and corruption," he said.."Next week we will consider dissolving the fund and establishing a new agency for state property."
State radio had earlier quoted state attorney Mladen Bajić as saying six people had been arrested, among them three vice-presidents of the HFP, which is in charge of privatizing state assets.
It said they were alleged to have taken bribes worth several hundred thousand euros. Bajić said a probe into mismanagement at the HFP had been going on for more than a year.
The European Union has urged Croatia to fight graft and speed up reforms of its judiciary and public services as the former Yugoslav republic attempts to conclude negotiations for membership of the bloc by 2009.
Brussels has so far refrained from setting an entry date but many analysts believe Croatia will become the EU's 28th member by 2011.
Croatian President Stjepan Mesić was quoted by state radio as saying the HFP was “a hotbed of corruption and deception.”
"The fight against crime in the privatization field is still far from being over. It has actually just begun," the radio reported Mesić as saying.
