WB: Serbia improves corruption control

The report has measured governance by a complex set of interdependent criteria and six separate categories. World Bank experts point to corruption as a principal impediment to economic progress.

Serbia scored 46 out of 100 points for efficiency in controlling corruption.

As for other five categories, it has 51.4 points for civic liberties and accountability, 44.5 for civil service effectiveness, 40.5 for legislation quality and 35.2 for the rule of law.

The political stability in Serbia in 2006 received 24.5 points, 2.9 more than its 2005 score.

When it comes to other countries in the region, Slovenia has emerged as a leader in good governance. Croatia has come second, with a slight advantage over Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia.

“Good governance results in higher standards of living for all population segments,” author of the report Daniel Kaufman told the Voice of America.

"A country that improves significantly in the quality of rule of law or in controlling corruption, in the long term can expect a three-fold increase in per capita income, going from US$ 1,000 per year to US$ 3,000 or from US$ 8,000 to $24,000 per year,” he said.
