Report: Serbia behind neighbours in textile industry

This is the conclusion of a study conducted by the European Stability Initiative (ESI), a Berlin-based non-profit research and policy institute, which compared the state of textile industries in Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria. The report points out, however, that Serbia still has a chance of salvaging its textile industry if the authorities start implementing the experience of neighbouring countries on time.

The main reason for Serbia’s straggle is slow progress towards the European Union. Serbia has yet to sign the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU. In 2005, when this research was carried out, Serbia was the only country with EU export quotas and is still pending admission to the World Trade Organisation.
