Net Patrol receives 2,600 reports of illicit online content

All reports came from Serbian users, but the content was located here only in two instances - specifically, in Kosovo.

Net Patrol has recently launched an Android app that complements its website.

According to Miljana Jovanovic, coordinator of the service, most reports concern abuse of minors for pornography, while about 20 percent are related to online harassment.

She notesd that Net Patrol has operated from the first day with the approval of the Department of High-Tech Crime of the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP), and in cooperation with them.

"We only deal with illegal content found on legal sites. It's enough for someone who comes across child pornography to send us a link through our website and we will do all we can to have the content removed. We're not hackers bringing down websites. Our job is to immediately inform the company on whose web address something is located," said Jovanovic.

She added it was important that people report illicit content as soon they notice it, so that the reaction can be swift. Jovanovic mentioned an example of a website where child pornography recently appeared that was not hosted in Serbia, but was reported by an internet user from Serbia.

The pedophile content was removed within 24 hours - but by that time, it had been seen by more than 30,000 visitors. She noted that the longer some content is present on the internet, the more it spreads, and is less likely to be fully deleted.

"Net Patrol is part of the global network INHOPE, consisting of similar services in more than 40 countries. As soon as something is reported in one country, we all receive notification. If it turned out that a site is hosted in Serbia, we would immediately inform MUP's Department of High-Tech Crime and the prosecution. Other members of the network react the same way, in accordance with the laws of the countries in which they work," Jankovic explained.
