Minister: No indication of terrorist attacks

Large police forces have been engaged in the implementation of security measures, including preventive engagement of the special forces and collaboration with domestic and foreign services, Stefanovic told a press conference.

The minister said that there is a list of suspected terrorists who theoretically could threaten the territory of Serbia. “So far they have not been coming to Serbia, nor is there a terrorist attack on Serbia being prepared,” said Stefanovic.

"Unlike some European cities, where the army and the police are on the streets in armored vehicles and patrol the busiest tourist sites carrying automatic weapons, this is not the case in Serbia,” he said.

Stefanovic underlined that heightened security measures have been in place for the past several months, with an aim to protect the vital infrastructure and the safety of citizens, and specified that security has only been increased around the infrastructure facilities that could be the target of terrorist attacks, such as police stations. The overall crime rates in Serbia fell by 2.5 percent, and the number of crime cases solved, which includes all abductions, increased in total by four percent, Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Sunday.

Stefanovic specified that 32 murder cases dating back to 2000 have been solved during the past year. This includes the case of abduction and murder of 15-year-old Tijana Juric, and the murder of Ranko Panic (41), who was beaten to death during a Serbian Radical Party's rally on July 29, 2008.

A total of seven abduction cases were reported in Serbia in 2015, and all have been solved, the minister told a press conference.

The quantity of illegal drugs seized by the police is 3.7 times larger than in 2014, he pointed out, adding that over 280 kilograms of various narcotics were seized from January to June 2015.

The minister also noted that owing to the increased activities of the traffic police, the number of road accidents and fatalities has been reduced, most notably among children.

Serbian police have also been dealing with the large inflow of migrants, he added.

The police forces are in control of the border and successfully maintain public order, stressed Stefanovic, adding that no major incidents involving the migrants and the citizens of Serbia have been reported.
