KRALJEVO Police have arrested 16 persons on corruption charges in the central Serbian town of Kraljevo, including former Mayor Ljubisa Simovic. The arrested persons are suspected of abuses during construction of prefabricated houses in Kraljevo after an earthquake in 2010. The police believe that the suspects misused the funds intended for reconstruction of homes damaged in the earthquake. 16 persons arrested for misuse of funds “This was the money that was deposited by the Serbian government to a special account of the municipality of Kraljevo and the money was supposed to be used for reconstruction of homes of families who were in the most difficult situation,” Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljovic told reporters. He stressed that the suspects had incurred damages worth more than EUR 1mn to the town's budget. Veljovic said that the investigation would continue. “The police’s work is not done. We continue to inspect humanitarian campaigns, meaning money that was collected through various donations, material or some other forms. The final amount will certainly be higher,” he added. The suspects have been remanded in custody and they will be taken before an investigative judge of Kraljevo’s Higher Court within a legal deadline. B92 Beta
