Man cleared of charges in embassy attack

Milan Živanović, charged with setting fire to the U.S. embassy in Belgrade, was acquitted on Thursday due to a lack of evidence by the Belgrade District Court.

BELGRADE Milan Zivanovic, charged with setting fire to the U.S. embassy in Belgrade, was acquitted on Thursday due to a lack of evidence by the Belgrade District Court. However, the 24-year-old was sent to jail for one year after he was found guilty of stealing a leather jacket and gloves which belonged to an embassy employee. Man cleared of charges in embassy attack Judge Milan Londrovic said that no evidence was presented that Zivanovic, alone or in a group, set fire to the U.S. embassy and that the court was therefore clearing him of charges. Zivanovic, who is a college student, was found guilty of coming to the embassy after the rally together with several unidentified individuals and stealing a leather jacket and gloves which belonged Branislav Lukic, who worked at the embassy. In deciding on Zivanovic's sentence, the court took into account that he had no prior convictions and that his judgment was compromised, though not significantly, said the judge. Zivanovic was convicted for aggravated theft, the punishment for which is between one and eight years in prison. Zivanovic and the Belgrade District Prosecutor's Office have the right to appeal to the Appellate Court.
