The Hague Tribunal will not be guided by prayers or any protests when it comes to ruling in cases of Croat generals, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic says. He pointed out that the Hague Tribunal would rule based on the facts in the case. “Hague Tribunal makes decisions based on facts” The Croat president said that he personally would never dare predict any verdict. He said that the Hague Tribunal would pay no attention to malicious attempts to advocate some acquittals and pointed out that a large part of the Croatian public did not have a clear picture about what was going on in The Hague since many trials had been closed to public. “We see that individuals by protesting and raising tensions, regardless of the generals’ wishes, want to use their situation for their own political profit,” he said. The Hague Tribunal should announce a verdict in the case of three Croat generals accused of war crimes during and after the operation Storm on April 15. The prosecution has requested that Ante Gotovina be sentenced to 27 years in prison, Milan Markac, who commanded special police units, to 23 and Ivan Cermak to 17 years. The Catholic Church has called on believers to fast every Friday in April and pray for “a just verdict to the generals“, some war veteran associations announced a rally for April 15 in order to “watch live broadcast of the acquittal“, while other associations decided to hold a rally against the Hague verdicts on April 16.
