Justice Ministry State Secretary Slobodan Homen said that the investigation of Darko Saric must be completed, regardless of potential consequences. He said that even if it leads to early elections, the full truth about the drug boss and his dealings must be uncovered. “Saric case must be completed” “It is not important if someone is a member of one party or another. If they had something to do with Saric, they will be held responsible,” Homen told daily Press. Explaining his recent statement that members of Saric’s crime group were planning the assassination of President Boris Tadic and other state officials, Homen said that there couldn’t be a full parallel drawn to the assassination of prime minister Zoran Djindjic in 2003, but that this fact does not decrease the level of risk or threats in any way. “The current fight against crime by the state, unlike in 2003, does not only have the support of the government, but the opposition as well, which shows the maturity of the people over the last seven years. Of course, this does not decrease the risk. We believe that we should tell the public everything that is happening, regardless of whether the threats can be realized or not,” Homen said. He said that the financial gains of Saric’s drug trade and his increase in power can be monitored from 2004 to 2009, when they began to fall, and in these five years, people from the government should be looked for who were helping them launder the money. In confirming who protected Saric, there are three routes of investigations—state officials, political parties, and Interior Ministry operatives and other institutions that protected Saric, Homen said. “We will see where they will end, but the roads certainly lead to politics.” “There was talk of Saric, but a serious country needs evidence. Before the formation of the government in 2008, the state was not ready to start this. Why this is so is another story. His name was not allowed to be mentioned in public, to be honest. People whispered his name on the streets,” Homen said.
