The Supreme Court has continued reading out the first instance verdict in the Zoran Djindjic murder trial. The verdict was delivered on May 23, 2007 at the Special Department of the Belgrade District Court and it sentenced Milorad Ulemek, the former commander of the Special Operation Unit (JSO) and his deputy Zvezdan Jovanovic to 40 years in prison. Djindjic murder appeal continues Other members of the Zemun Clan indicted for the murder of the late prime minister were Aleksandar Simovic, Ninoslav Konstantinovic, Vladimir Milisavljevic and Sretko Kalinic, who were sentenced to 35 years, Zeljko Tojaga, Branislav Bezarevic, Milos Simovic, Milan Jurisic and Dusan Krsmanovic, who received 30 year sentences, as well as Sasa Pejakovic who was sentenced to eight years in prison. The trial began on December 23, 2003. During the course of the trial, more than 150 witnesses gave testimony, as well as four protected witnesses. Court reporter Zoran Savic highlighted the judgment of the first instance Trial Chamber that the motive for the murder had been Ulemek’s fear that he would be arrested for previous murders and abductions. Savic also read out the defendants’ testimonies from the initial trial. Once he finishes reading the 450-page verdict, Savic will present the defense appeals to the Supreme Court’s Trial Chamber. The Special Prosecutor’s Office did not appeal against the first instance verdict. The appeals will be ruled on during a closed door session of the Supreme Court.

Other members of the Zemun Clan indicted for the murder of the late prime minister were Aleksandar Simović, Ninoslav Konstantinović, Vladimir Milisavljević and Sretko Kalinić, who were sentenced to 35 years, Željko Tojaga, Branislav Bezarević, Miloš Simović, Milan Jurišić and Dušan Krsmanović, who received 30 year sentences, as well as Saša Pejaković who was sentenced to eight years in prison.
