The Supreme Court has adjourned a session on appeals on the first degree verdicts in the Djindjic murder case. The decision came after defense teams asked that two judges be excluded from the proceedings. Supreme Court suspends session Milorad Ulemek’s defense attorney Slobodan Milivojevic asked for the dismissal of judges Sonja Manojlovic and Miodrag Vicentijevic from the appeals process because of their alleged bias in the third degree proceedings in the Ivan Stambolic murder and attempted murder of Vuk Draskovic cases. The decision on this motion will be made by Supreme Court’s President Vida Petrovic Skero. The court was in session today to consider the appeals lodged to the verdicts in the Djindjic assassination case. The first degree verdicts read by Belgrade’s Special Court Trial Chamber stated that former commander of the Special Operations Unit (JSO) Milorad Ulemek, a.k.a. Legija, and the leader of the crime group Zemun Clan Dusan Spasojevic plotted to murder Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic. To this end, the court concluded, they enlisted several members of the JSO to execute the assassination, including the shooter, deputy JSO commander Zvezdan Jovanovic. Spasojevic was shot dead while resisting arrest shortly after the March 12, 2003 assassination. Both Ulemek and Jovanovic were sentenced to 40 years in prison. Djindjic family lawyer Rajko Danilovic told B92 yesterday that the defense can "hardly come up with some surprise witnesses and evidence in the proceedings before the second degree Trial Chamber". He also declined to comment on the composition of the Supreme Court chamber in the appeals process, saying only that the judges must be trusted, and praised the court's proven credibility. The chamber has five judges and is presided by judges Dragisa Djordjevic and Zoran Savic. Savic is the judge who will report on the case’s progress so far, B92 has learned. The other three members are be Andjelka Stankovic, Sonja Manojlovic and Miodrag Vicentijevic. Milorad Ulemek and Zvezdan Jovanovic (FoNet)
