The contract for Vidic’s transfer from Red Star to Spartak states that the value of the transfer was EUR 5mn. However, it was subsequently established in court that the value of the transfer had actually been closer to EUR 7mn, and charges were filed against Dzajic and Marinkovic for illegally embezzling EUR 2mn. Vidic’s only comment was that he was “sorry because of everything and about the fact that Dragan Dzajic is in custody,” but that he could not comment any further. Dzajic, Marinkovic, and Vladimir Cvetkovic were arrested on February 5 and have been in custody ever since. Their lawyers claim that not a single witness has been questioned in the case in the past month. Belgrade District Court spokeswoman Ivana Ramic says that there have been no intentional delays, adding that the case is very specific, that the investigation has been expanded on several occasions, and that the case has not yet been seen by the judge due to complications in the Supreme Court, adding that there have also been adjournments because of bomb threats. The former Red Star officials were initially arrested on suspicion of embezzling DM 5.1mn from the transfer of Goran Drulic to Real Zaragoza. The investigation was then widened because of suspicions that a EUR 3.5mn bung had also been taken from the transfer of Zoran Njegus to Atletico Madrid, and EUR 1.1mn for the sale of Perica Ognjenovic to Real Madrid. Cvetkovic and Marinkovic are on remand at Belgrade Central Prison, while Dzajic was transferred to the Military Medical Academy on April 24 due to illness. The investigation will continue on June 11.
