Milorad Ulemek’s lawyer Slobodan Milivojevic has called for his client’s acquittal at the Zemun Clan trial In his closing statement at the trial of the Zemun Clan criminal group at the Special Court in Belgrade, Milivojevic demanded the acquittal of the first-accused, calling the charges trumped-up and arbitrary, claiming there was no material evidence pointing to Ulemek or indicating that he had committed any criminal act. Ulemek's lawyer protests client's innocence The lawyer contested the testimonies of the protected witnesses, maintaining that they should not have acquired that status as they had either taken part in the crimes or were not members of the group, and called on the Court to review their status. Ulemek had not been involved in any of the crimes included in the indictment, and then the prosecutor got hold of the protected witnesses, whose testimonies were contradictory, he said. Milivojevic also questioned the confession of co-accused Dusan Krsmanovic, claiming it had been made under police torture during Operation Sword, conducted following the murder of the late prime minister, Zoran Djindjic. According to the protected witnesses’ statements, said Ulemek’s counsel, Dusan Spasojevic worked with Ljubisa Buha until 2000, and for a year or two after. “The building in Siler Street was completed in 2000 and cost DM 10mn, in other words before teaming up with Legija (Ulemek’s nickname), which means that Spasojevic was working with Cume (Buha),” he concluded. Milivojevic expressed his surprise that Ulemek could be the ringleader, given that many of the witness and defendants did not even know him. The lawyer added that the other accused had all cited Spasojevic as the man who had sanctioned the crimes, and not his client. After Milivojevic, co-accused Aleksandar Simovic’s lawyer is due to give his closing statement next. A further 27 lawyers are still to make their closing statements, together with the defendants themselves, making a total of 29. The Zemun Clan are accused of 15 murders, three kidnappings and terrorist attacks on the Defense Road company and the Democratic Party of Serbia headquarters. The gang’s leaders and members have already received first instance convictions for Djindjic’s murder, while Ulemek has received a 40-year sentence for the murder of former President Ivan Stambolic, as well as the attempted murder of Serbian Renewal Movement leader Vuk Draskovic.
