U.S. citizens Agron, Mehmet, and Yli Bytyqi were kidnapped at the end of June 1999 as they were leaving Prokuplje prison where they had served a sentence for illegally entering the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from Albania. Their remains were recovered from a mass grave in Petrovo Selo in 2001. Former Special Police members Sreten Popovic and Milos Stojanovic have been accused of committing war crimes against three U.S. citizens, by depriving them of a fair hearing and thus assisting unidentified MUP officers in their murder. The brothers were taken to the Police Training Center in Petrovo Selo where they were subsequently executed with shots to the back of the head. Popovic and Stojanovic pleaded not guilty to all the charges at the beginning of the trial on November 13, 2006. They pleaded not guilty once again yesterday, stating that they had been following orders issued by their superiors. Popovic explained in detail how he had received orders from then public security chief Vlastimir Djordjevic to organize and pick up three persons of Albanian nationality at the Prokuplje district prison and hand them over to “colleagues from the Interior Ministry.” The Bytyqi brothers were members of the Atlantic Brigade, a volunteer group which served under the Kosovo Liberation Army in 1999.
