BELGRADE Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia Michael Davenport has said that Brussels had "once again placed the emphasis on economic issues." That is why Serbia will get all the necessary support for the creation of a successful economic policy, he was quoted as saying. Brussels "to assist Serbia in economic policy creation" At the presentation of economic segments in the latest report of the European Commission (EC) in the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS), Davenport said that economy is indirectly covered by placing the focus on Chapters 23 and 24 in the initial stage of talks. The Stabilization and Association Agreement which entered into force on September 1 offers ample room for the Serbian economy to be elevated to a higher level, Davenport said. Head of the European Integration Section in the EU Delegation in Serbia Freek Janmaat spoke more about the economic aspects of the EC report, and he announced new modes of advisory assistance by Brussels to EU hopefuls. It is very important to underscore a point from this year's Enlargement strategy which states that not a single Western Balkan country can be said to have a functional market economy, which is one of the two main economic conditions for EU accession, while the second one is the ability to stand competition, Janmaat said. He announced that EU finance ministers will regularly assess economic developments in candidate countries so as to increase the efficiency of economic reforms. Serbia's economy is slowly recovering and inflationary pressures have dropped, which yields a good development perspective, he said. A downside to this lies in the fact that, from the EC standpoint, Serbia's economic growth is unevenly distributed in certain areas and that the unemployment rate is still rather high, Janmaat said. We encourage the government to adopt a new law on labor because the current law contains inflexibilities discouraging employers from hiring new workers, Janmaat said. Serbia's public debt is still very high, as well as the budget deficit, but the EU welcomed the government's fiscal consolidation measures as the step in right direction, he said. (Tanjug) Tanjug
