Serbia's foreign debt reached EUR 23.bn at the end of June, the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) said. Public sector debt was EUR 8.3bn and private sector debt stood at EUR 15.5bn. Foreign debt reaches EUR 23.8bn Serbia's foreign debt rose by EUR 550mn in the second quarter of 2010, of which EUR 450mn was due to changes in exchange rates, as the euro weakened against other currencies within the structure of external debt, said the central bank. The foreign debt to GDP ratio was 78.1 percent, 1.8 percentage points more than in March and just below the high debt threshold of 80 percent. Serbia's public debt totaled EUR 10.8bn or 35.4 percent of the GDP at the end of June. Still below the upper limit of the category of less indebted countries (defined by the IMF and World Bank as public debt to GDP ratio of 48 percent and public debt to exports ratio of 132 percent), Serbia’s stock of public debt is not yet alarming as to represent a macroeconomic predicament, said the NBS.
