A total of 50 electronic and print media have been privatized in Serbia in the last six years, the Privatization Agency announced.

A total of 50 electronic and print media have been privatized in Serbia in the last six years, the Privatization Agency announced. At the same time, another 51 companies remain unsold. 50 electronic, print media privatized Belgrade daily Danas writes that there is no deadline for the completion of privatization of public companies, but that the Agency expects most of the local media to be privatized in 2010. Noting that the privatization process is currently frozen for 39 minority language media, the Agency reminds that the government adopted a conclusion postponing the privatization of local electronic media that broadcast in the languages of ethnic minorities until the changes to the Broadcasting Act are adopted. Assistant to the Minister of Culture in charge of the media Natasa Vuckovic-Lesendric told the newspaper that the completion of the strategy for media development is expected by the end of March, and that the strategy will point to possible solutions to the problems that have cropped up in the privatization process. “We recently submitted the strategy for media development to the European Commission, and it deals with the media privatization process among other topics. We hope the funding for the project is approved, after which we will conduct a comparative analysis of the markets in other countries to determine if the process is applicable in Serbia,” she said. According to her, many problems occurred during privatization, causing a number of privatized media to declare bankruptcy.
